The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture is bemused after dim-witted thieves made off with hemp plants from one of its research trial sites over the weekend. If the offenders are hoping for a high from smoking the hemp they’ll be disappointed. Hemp has less than 1 per cent THC, the chemical responsible for the effects of cannabis – the Institute says they might as well be smoking wheat. The Sandy Bay-based Institute says police are on the case and the theft hasn’t impacted their research into the uses of industrial hemp. “Industrial hemp is still a relatively new crop in Tasmania, and we are working with industry to conduct research trials to support the growth and development of the industry,” said the Institute in a social media post. “Fortunately, we don’t believe the theft has impacted our research and the trial is continuing as planned.”
