The Tiwi Islands: 4 Bombers Players (AFL) Busted For Trying To Bring Weed & Alcohol Home After A Match In Australia

Four Tiwi Bombers in hot water after police seize drugs, alcohol from team plane

Drugs and alcohol are placed on the tarmac below a chartered fixed-wing plane.

Four people connected to the Tiwi Bombers Football Club have been issued infringement notices after they were allegedly caught bringing illicit substances into the Tiwi Islands.

Key points:

  • A police search was conducted after the Bombers’ Saturday NTFL fixture in Darwin
  • 72 grams of cannabis and 20 grams of synthetic cannabis were seized
  • AFLNT said it would assist police with inquiries

NT Police said it conducted a search of passengers on a chartered plane at the Wurrumiyanga airport on Bathurst Island at 7:00pm on Saturday “after receiving information passengers were transporting illicit substances into the community from Darwin”.

“Police searched the passengers, nine of whom are players and staff of the Tiwi Bombers Football Team, and seized a total of 72 grams of cannabis, 20 grams of synthetic cannabis and four litres of alcohol,” NT Police said.

Four men aged 20, 26, 27 and 30 have been issued notices for possessing cannabis in a public place and bringing alcohol into an Indigenous community.

The Bombers played a 1:30pm Northern Territory Football League match in Darwin on Saturday before some members of the team flew back to the Tiwi Islands.

In a statement AFLNT said it was aware of the infringements.

“Where possible, AFLNT will assist the NT Police with its inquiries and will work with the clubs and relevant parties,” AFLNT said.

“AFLNT is not in a position to provide further comment until more details have been ascertained.”

The Tiwi Bombers Football Club told the ABC it would wait on further details from police before issuing a statement.

The Tiwi Islands represent arguably the most fertile ground for AFL talent in the country.

With a current population under 2,600, the islands have produced three Norm Smith medallists and players in six of the past eight AFL grand finals.

The Tiwi-based club is affiliated with the Essendon Bombers AFL club, which has direct access to young talent on the islands through its “Next Generation Academy”.

The AFL club also sends players and coaching staff to the island annually and runs education sessions for players and students.
