South Africa: Weed found in potato bags, dealer sentenced

Mzokholo Sithukuthezi (31) was found guilty of dealing in drugs in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court.

He was recently sentenced to five years’ imprisonment wholly suspended for five years.

He was further fined R50 000 or three years’ imprisonment and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

During December 2020, members of Port Shepstone Crime Intelligence and SAPS K9 unit acted on information and as a result made an exceptional recovery of 43 bags of dagga weighing in at 176 577kg, with a street value of R529 731.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said the members stopped a suspicious LDV on the N2 Main Harding Road in Marburg and arrested a man.

The dagga was concealed in potato bags. Initial investigations revealed the dagga was coming from the Eastern Cape and destined for Durban.

The investigating officer in the case was Detective Warrant Officer Wimpie Strydom of Port Shepstone Detective Service.
