NZ: German Backpackers Caught In NZ With 2kg Weed

A German national caught in Queenstown with two kilos of cannabis and 10 LSD tablets will forfeit more than $118,000 cash of various currencies.

Sven Harrieder did not appear in a High Court at Invercargill civil hearing on Tuesday, when Justice Rachel Dunningham enforced asset forfeiture orders.

Harrieder was living at a backpackers in Queenstown in June 2020 when police found more than 2.1 kilograms of cannabis in zip-lock bags, LSD and $117,405.80 in New Zealand cash, AUD$770 and USD$40.

Fellow German backpacker Justin Christopher Hamilton lived at the same place and was convicted of possession of cannabis for supply after police found 92.64g of the drug packaged for sale in his room.

He also did not appear in the civil hearing on Tuesday.

Hamilton was sentenced to six months’ community detention, 350 hours’ community work and six months’ supervision with special conditions.

Harrieder was originally sentenced to 26 months’ jail.
