Yes, this is a real thing. The Auckland University of Technology (AUT) will begin offering a postgraduate course in medicinal cannabis next month as people look to tap into the growing (sorry) marijuana industry.

The course – titled ‘The Science of Medicinal Cannabis’ – will teach students how to cultivate, extract and produce medicinal-grade cannabis products (all legitimately of course).

Subjects will also include the history of medicinal cannabis, botanical aspects such as breeding, extraction methods and delivery systems and dosing.

They aren’t stopping there either – AUT says it plans to have a range of undergraduate and postgraduate specialised courses on a variety of cannabis related subjects from 2021.

Medicinal cannabis is legal in New Zealand – provided patients meeting strict criteria and receiving a prescription from a specialist doctor, or seek a case-by-case approval from the Minister of Health – and there are predictions that the industry could one day rival New Zealand’s wine or even its wool industries.
