Georgia: Kids toss bags of weed out car window while mom leads police on high-speed chase

A police chase reaching speeds of 177 kilometres per hour and made more distinct by a woman’s children tossing cannabis from her SUV has ended with a Georgia mom facing drug offences.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, deputies with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) were led on the chase along Georgia’s Interstate 85 last Dec. 10.

The possible charges were only announced this month as the woman was recovering from injuries sustained when she was ejected from the vehicle.

Body-cam video from the police, included in the Fox 5 Atlanta coverage, shows the officer in pursuit of the blue Dodge Nitro as the 34-year-old woman speeds and weaves her way through highway traffic.

On the day of the chase, deputies witnessed bags, the contents of which were later determined to be cannabis, being tossed out of the speeding SUV by the woman’s children. The woman was driving, her boyfriend was in the passenger seat and the two children were in the backseat of the SUV.

Deputies managed to stop the speeding vehicle by employing what is called a low-speed PIT (pursuit intervention technique) manoeuvre. This involves a pursuing police vehicle forcing a fleeing car to turn sideways abruptly, generally resulting in the driver losing control or stopping.

A CCSO investigator told Fox 5 Atlanta on camera, “Anytime you’re in a chase, it’s dangerous for anyone. But when you have your own children in the backseat of the car throwing drugs out the window, it just adds an insane level of recklessness.
