The city home to Georgia’s largest public beach is making a change to the local marijuana laws.
Tybee Island’s city council recently approved an ordinance which imposes a civil fine of $150 for those in possession of an ounce or less of marijuana, making it no longer a crime.
In the past, individuals in possession of marijuana would be charged with a misdemeanor and receive a $1,000 fine or up to a year in jail.
Tybee Island has joined at least a dozen other Georgia cities and counties that have cut back on marijuana penalties when dealing with minor amounts.
