Florida Highway Patrol seizes 150 lbs. of marijuana during traffic stop in St. Johns County

A Jacksonville man was arrested Tuesday evening after a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in northwest St. Johns County led to the discovery of about 150 pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Isavous I’Shawn Bynes, 28, of East 10th Street was charged with possession and trafficking of marijuana, and trafficking in drugs, and released early Wednesday on $32,500 bond, St. Johns County jail records show.

Troopers were alerted to two white sport-utility vehicles slowly traveling north on I-95 in the passing lane, holding up traffic behind them, the arrest report said. A Chevrolet Tahoe with a Tennessee license plate was stopped about a half-mile from Exit 329, while a Chevrolet Traverse with a Florida license plate was halted nearby.

A trooper went to talk to the driver of one of the SUVs and smelled a strong odor of marijuana. When he asked if there was any medical marijuana or hemp in the vehicle, the driver said there wasn’t, but he was “shaking, extremely nervous and reluctant to exit,” the arrest report said.

Backup units were requested, then a look inside one of the bags in the back of the vehicle revealed a large amount of marijuana, the report said. A search revealed about 150 pounds of marijuana in two suitcases, two duffel bags and a taped-up cardboard box in the back of the SUV.
