Big Bear California: Driver arrested for transporting 33 pounds of marijuana

On Jan. 12, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Deputy Estrada from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station was conducting routine patrol in the unincorporated area of Big Bear City. Estrada observed a vehicle committing a traffic violation in the area near North Greenway Drive and West Arbor Lane, and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. After some investigation, Estrada discovered approximately 33 pounds of processed marijuana in the vehicle. The driver was later identified as Ithier Batista, 31-year old resident of Miami, Florida, according to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s Department.

Batista was booked into custody at the Big Bear jail where he was cited to appear in court at a future date.

While marijuana consumption is legal in California, there are still certain laws that make marijuana illegal. No one under the age of 21 can use or possess marijuana. Additionally, it is illegal to possess, sell or transport any amount of marijuana over 28.5 grams or eight grams of concentrated cannabis. Medical marijuana users may be exempt to some of these laws with their doctors recommendation.
