Asia’s first Ayurvedic cannabis wellness retreat is now in Kerala

Hemp seeds, oil and powder will go into the F&B: in salads as a dressing, in vegetable stir-fries, and while steaming idlis and dosas. Hemp toiletries are set to be included in the accommodation too. Boheco’s cannabis leaf extract medicines and hemp nutrition products have been researched and manufactured in India, and will be prescribed under the guidance of the therapists at Poonthottam Ayurvedasram, a 28-room Ayurvedic hospital founded in 1989 by Vaidya PMS Raveendranath in Kerala’s Kulakkad village in Palakkad, about a three-hour drive from Kochi airport. “Poonthottam” means flower garden in Malayalam, and the retreat building is surrounded by a medicinal herb garden with around 200 plant species.

“The Himalayan Hemp Nutrition range is rich in its nutritional profile and is a great source of protein, omegas, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, to name a few,” Boheco stated in an email interview with Conde Nast Traveller. “On the other hand, the full-spectrum cannabis leaf extract range is a therapeutic/medical range that is rich in its cannabinoid profile which includes CBD and THC but is not limited to it. This range helps with varied lifestyle indications such as pain, stress and sleep.”

The treatments are available under three packages: Avyatha for pain management, Mukta for stress management and Nidra for sleep wellness. Each package is available for 14 or 21 nights and starts from Rs86,592. Treatments are decided upon consultation with the retreat’s Ayurvedic physician, and will include products by the retreat and Boheco. The cannabis leaf extract medicines are used for both external treatments and internal medication depending on the patient’s condition. The pain management programme, for example, can include abhyangam massage, medicated body treatments like patra pinda sveda and enema, personalised yoga sessions, a specialised diet plan with hemp products and diet counselling, and an introductory session about the medical effects of cannabis. Guests are guided on including medical cannabis in their daily lifestyle and can pick up Boheco’s products to continue their journey at home..
